Minutes from the September 14, 2006
Quintessential Quilters Meeting

The September 14, 2006 meeting of QQ was called to order by President Beckey McIntyre. She introduced this year’s officers and newsletter chairman Rita Reed. Four first time attendees were also introduced to the group.

Vice President Jodi Wigton introduced the program calendar for this year. Our first workshop will be Vicki Pignatelli for 2 days, November 10-11. Sign-ups began immediately at a cost of $115.00. Vicki’s theme will be "manipulations and holes in quilts".

New business:

  •  Joan Tuttle will be holding her annual retreat to Amish county the weekend before Thanksgiving. Right now the cost for 2 nights and 2 breakfasts is $129 per person - this will go down if more people sign up.
  •  Kathy Palmer, a new long arm quilter in the Dublin area, introduced herself and had a sample book for examination at the break.
  •  Mike Weatherby announced the dates for this year’s Deer Creek retreat (February 23-25, 2007) and showed service quilts from last year’s gathering. Registration begins at the October meeting and will be capped at 70.

The evening’s program was an overview of QQ’s service projects and some history.

  •  Kids N Kamp - June Palm shared the story of Kids N Kamp, an organization serving children who have cancer and their families. When it began in 1982, KNK served 62 children with a one time summer camp experience. This year they will serve 356 families with a slate of programs that run all year. QQ is most involved in the Quilts at the Shoe fund raiser, an auction of donated quilts held at Ohio Stadium. Last year’s auction of 70 quilts raised $30,000. To learn more about KNK, visit their website at www.kidsnkamp.org. To donate a quilt for the auction, call 614-262-2220. The deadline for judging for the show is October 6, but quilts can be donated after that. This year’s auction is Thursday, October 26. QQ also decorates a Christmas tree in an OSU theme for the auction.
  •  Choices - Wendy Bynner is the coordinator for this on-going service project. Started in 1977, Choices helps women and children around the issue of domestic violence. They provide a 24 hour crisis hotline and shelter some 800 women and children each year. Choices also offers an outreach program (legal support and advocacy), counseling, education and support groups. For over 10 years QQ has made and donated lap quilts, simple 9-patch or rail fence patterns that are given to guests at the shelter. We also collect items such as paper goods, feminine hygiene products, cleaning products and used cell phones for the residents.

Bobbie Brooks gave a slide presentation of her work - both quilts and artwork - that showed both her artistic talent and her wonderful sense of humor! Beckey announced her president’s challenge for this year - postcard quilts. Members are invited to make postcard quilt(s) which will be collected at the May meeting and sent to Japan to trade with some of Teri Tope's Japanese quilters.

Show and Tell completed the evening with a look at last year's block of the month challenge, last year’s "ugly green" challenge, the Diva quilts from the retreat - and lots of things completed over the summer.

Respectfully submitted,
Jane Hedge, Secretary
