Welcome to Quintessential Quilters!

February Meeting

Our next meeting is Thursday, Feb 9, 2012, starting at 7:00 PM. We meet at Mountview Baptist Church, 2140 Fishinger Road in Upper Arlington (corner of Mountview and Fishinger Roads). Please use the entrance with the canopy at the northeast side of the church.

PROGRAM: Redwork. The focus of February's QQ meeting is Redwork. "Believed to have originated in Europe in the 19th century and traveled to America prior to the War Between the States, the name is derived from the red cotton thread that was used to create this charming style of embroidery. Redwork found a niche among immigrants and the middle class due to its economy, sublime simplicity and widespread availability." [Source: www.prettyimpressivestuff.com/redwork.htm]

Mary Zesiger, National Quilting Association Certified Teacher and former member of QQ affectionately known as Mary Z, will join us for the evening. The topic of her lecture is "No Knots, No Tails," with wonderful hints and ideas for doing Redwork by hand.

"Redwork, Bluework and Greenwork, Oh My" will be QQ member Beth Schillig's topic as she tells us how to select designs to fit the space when machine quilting.

If you have any redwork or red-and-white quilts, please bring them to share with the guild.

Reminder: Our meeting policy for weather cancellations: If it is a level one, come if you can - but a level two or three, the meeting will be cancelled.

Announcements

Red BlockFEBRUARY RED & WHITE BLOCK EXCHANGE - Blocks are due at the Feb 9 2012 guild meeting. See a sample at the meeting and sign up to exchange. Click here for directions. Make and exchange your blocks with a blank center, then personalize the blocks however you choose after exchanged with applique, red work, or machine embroidery.

GROUP QUILT 2013 - At QQ's December Potluck, it was decided that we would use the above Red & White Block Exchange pattern for the basis of our 2013 raffle quilt. You do not have to commit to making X number of blocks if you do not care to – just make the one! Or, if you are participating in the block exchange, just make an extra block. Mike Weatherby is looking forward to receiving blocks from all of you at the February meeting, as this is an easy way for everyone to participate in QQ's Group Quilt. Also, please remember to keep the center square blank as we have not yet decided if we will use appliqué or redwork.

PLACEMATS – NATIONAL QUILTING DAY - In honor of the 21st Annual National Quilting Day (March 17), we will be delivering your placemats to LifeCare Alliance for their Meals-On-Wheels program. This will be the third year that QQ has provided the placemats which are delivered with the meals to brighten someone's day – we hope you'll want to participate. Placemats do not need to be elaborate. Have some orphan blocks? Just add some borders and you have a placemat! They are the perfect size to practice freemotion machine quilting, too. Please bring your placemats to the March meeting.

The folks at James Stitching Sisters have been saving some batting scraps that are just the right size for placemats and Gail Wadley and Janet White will be bringing them to the February meeting. (Speaking of the JSS - mark your calendar for the 8th Annual Quilt Day on April 28 from 9-4. Always a fun – and productive! – day for a good cause.)

Meals-on-Wheels provides hot nutritious meals to older adults and chronically ill persons who are unable to provide meals for themselves. It is just one service of LifeCare Alliance.
